Experience

Tom is developing his speaking ministry and has been encouraged by the warm reception to his talks from both Christian and non-Christian audiences. His enthusiastic and motivating style (and rather dry sense of humour!) goes down well with both Christians and non-Christians alike. He's comforable tackling difficult questions in open Q&A sessions, or helping people to understand the questions raised by contemporary culture. He has a particular passion to help people to think clearly and critically, and to teach a holistic view of Christian life and discipleship. Tom has an infectious passion for unpacking and explaining how the bible can speak into our most serious questions and struggles. He combines clear thinking with emotional sensitivity and an entertaining and engaging style to help people of both no faith and some, to come to understand what the Christian gospel and worldview has to say about the longing we all have within us, for meaning, reality, intimacy, purpose and significance.

Tom started speaking in 2003 at University, while he was simultaneously president of the Philosophy Society and a member of the Christian Union's leadership team. He has experience leading seminars as well as speaking to larger groups. In the last 3 years he has spoken more than 70 times, on many topics, to diverse groups such as artists, students, men's groups, churches and youth groups. Drawing from his time working with students at UCCF Tom has experience of many different denominational contexts and minefields and Tom is able to help people learn from the bible without getting in the way himself. He has led events in many different formats: discussions, lecturing, teaching, multimedia workshops, etc. As an adult convert and at heart, an evangelist, Tom is an enthusiastic and motivating speaker. He usually uses captivating film clips, profound quotes and relevant illustrations to get the point accross.

Speaking topics

Tom is a natural communicator who will happily speak or provide training on your subject but areas of particular expertise include:

  • Suffering: Talks and workshops, that appeal to sceptic and believer alike. Practical and open sharing of experiences and that help people to understand the different kinds of helps and answers that the Bible, and each other, can offer us in times of questioning, and when suffering and pain leave us adrift and flattened
  • Apologetics (giving reasons) and Evangelism: How do they relate together? How do we do evangelism? How can we do evangelism that wins people? Why is apologetics so important? How can we learn to do it better? How can we avoid arguments but still engage meaningfully with peoples questions? Why does evangelism sound like something that you wouldn't want to do to your dog?
  • Worldviews: What is a worldview? How can we talk about them and think about them? How to think about and engage with worldviews generally, or a specific focus on any of a number of major worldviews. What is Buddhism? Why is Eastern spirituality becoming more and more popular? What kind of spirituality do people want? How can we use a worldview survey?
  • Science and faith: Where did human beings come from? Where did the universe come from? Does evolution conflict with the bible? How can we make sense of science and Christian faith together?
  • Faith and Reason: Are there good reasons to believe anything at all? How can I think through my beliefs? Is Christian faith about switching off your mind, stopping thinking and starting to wish that there is a God out there? With his background in philosophy and apologetics Tom loves sensitively tackling the idea that Christian faith is merely a leap into the dark.
  • Bible teaching: Tom has completed seminary level courses in Historical Theology, Hermeneutics and Biblical Exposition and Systematic Theology. He is an increasingly confident bible expositor and is keen to help people to understand the message of God's Word.
  • Acoustic nights: Working with Caroline, Tom is also able to provide musical entertainment, alongside relevant speaking. Caroline is an extremely gifted singer and can offer her own songs on guitar and piano as well as contemporary popular music Coldplay, The Fray, etc. Caroline is also available without Tom.
