About Culturewatch

In this section:

Culturewatch is a significant resource from Damaris Trust, helping people to explore the message behind the media. The site contains hundreds of articles reflecting on films, books, music, television, theatre and art, as well as looking at issues and trends within today's society. These articles are not reviews in the conventional sense, but are distinctive in their focus on underlying beliefs and values - on worldviews.

Culturewatch.tv launched in 2008 to complement these articles. These short (five or six minutes) video podcasts are designed to stimulate viewers to begin to think about what is going on under the surface of films. Culturewatch.tv videos can be viewed online or downloaded from Tools for Talks.

As well as articles and videos, Culturewatch also includes many study guides. Rather than presenting our analysis of a book or film or album, they provide a brief summary of the content, some background and a number of questions to stimulate your own thinking. These guides are primarily produced for Culturewatch Groups, but people use them in all kinds of contexts, whether with groups, families or for individual reflection.

New content is added each week. Sign up for CultureWatch Update, our free weekly email, for introductions to all the fresh material. If you are interested in republishing any Culturewatch articles or study guides, see our Copyright and republishing page.

All CultureWatch content is written from a Christian perspective, but it's written for everyone, whether or not they share this faith. How obvious the Christian angle is very much depends on the subject matter. Sometimes it's in the background, forming the unseen framework within which a writer is evaluating the film or books; other times the subject matter is crying out for very explicit theological reflection. Christianity makes bold claims because Jesus Christ claimed to be the unique Son of God, entering into our world to die and rise again in order to reconcile rebellious human beings with the God who created them and longs for a relationship with them. Culturewatch writers believe that it is, therefore, important for everyone to explore how Christian faith and contemporary culture relate to each other as part fo the process of discovering the truth about life, the universe and everything.
