Video files help
Damaris provides videos on many of its websites, in two different ways:
- Downloadable videos (right click on link and select 'save target as')
- Videos which can be viewed directly on the webpage, using a Flash player
For help on either of these, see under the appropriate heading below.
Downloadable videos
These are usually offered in two different formats:
- Quicktime (files that end with .mov). To play these you will need to have an up-to-date version of Quicktime player on your computer. This comes free with a MAC, but if you have a PC you can simply download the player for free at Apple's website (don't let the Apple site trick you into paying for the Pro version - you just need the FREE Quicktime player)
- Windows Media (files that end with .wmv). To play the .wmv download you will need to have Windows Media player on your computer (please ensure it is the up-to-date version). This comes free with Microsoft Windows and can be updated from www.microsoft.com
We often specify the size of the downloadable file, in megabytes (MB), in brackets alongside the file link - eg (35.5MB). If you have broadband you will have no problem downloading these videos.
Embedded Flash videos
To play an embedded video, simply click somewhere on the video screen (where it says "Click here to play")
If you are unable to see a video screen, then there may be two reasons:
- If you are using Internet Explorer, it may be that an ActiveX control on the page is disabled - if so then a long bar will have appeared just below the Internet Explorer tool bar near the top of the page. Click on this to activate the control.
- You do not have a Flash player installed on your PC. In this case, download one for free from Adobe's website
How to put a flash video on your website or blog
When editing your website or blog, look for a way of entering HTML code. This may take the form of:
- An "Edit HTML" tab, which allows you to view the entire webpage or blog as HTML code
- A pop-up window that will allow you to enter a selected amount of HTML code
Copy the embed code for the Flash video from the Damaris website and paste into the HTML of your website or blog.
For example:
<embed src="http://www.damaris.org/cmd/flash/videoplayer.swf" width="384" height="236" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" wmode="opaque" flashvars="vid=0B17A5"></embed>
This will then appear as a Flash video when you publish your website or post your blog.
