Video files help
Damaris provides videos on many of its websites, in two different ways:
- Downloadable videos
- Videos which can be viewed directly on the webpage, using a Flash player
For help on either of these, see under the appropriate heading below.
Downloadable videos
These are usually offered in two different formats:
- Quicktime (files that end with .mov). To play these you will need to have an up-to-date version of Quicktime player on your computer. This comes free with a MAC, but if you have a PC you can simply download the player for free at Apple's website (don't let the Apple site trick you into paying for the Pro version - you just need the FREE Quicktime player)
- Windows Media (files that end with .wmv). To play the .wmv download you will need to have Windows Media player on your computer. This comes free with Microsoft Windows.
We usually specify the size of the downloadable file, in megabytes, in brackets alongside the file link - eg (35.5MB). Where possible we offer files in different sizes. Our usual convention is to end smaller files with _a and larger files with _b (NB When you see a _a and a _b file with the same prefix they are exactly the same video, just in different sizes). If you have broadband you will have no problem downloading the bigger (_b) file, but if you don't you might decide to stick with the smaller (_a) ones. Of course, the bigger the file the higher the quality of picture.
Embedded Flash videos
To play an embedded video, simply click somewhere on the video screen (where it says "Click here to play")
If you are unable to see a video screen, then there may be two reasons:
- If you are using Internet Explorer, it may be that an ActiveX control on the page is disabled - if so then a long bar will have appeared just below the Internet Explorer tool bar near the top of the page. Click on this to activate the control.
- You do not have a Flash player installed on your PC. In this case, download one for free from Adobe's website
If your problem does not relate to downloadable video files, look at our other help pages.
If you don't find a solution, please email the details of the problem you face to help@damaris.org. We will try to solve it and update this page for everyone else.
