ADVENT 2009
What's Advent all about? Sometimes, it feels like a season devoted to waiting, but filled with more busyness than any other time of the year. A paradox if ever there was one! Advent, however, is a rare gift in the Christian calendar. It's an opportunity to assess our lives in light of the hopes and beliefs we hold as Christians. It's a time of anticipation in which we look forward not only to Christmas, but also to the Second Coming of Christ.
Advent comes from the Latin word adventus, meaning coming or arrival. And that's where this series of deovox places its emphasis: on the coming of Christ again in glory. The first three episodes are based on passages from the Old Testament that highlight the characteristics of the Messiah. What kind of king did the Jews anticipate? How did Jesus fulfill those expectations, if at all? And what do the prophets tell us about the one who will one day come to reign on earth? The last episode focuses on the characters, Simeon and Anna, recorded in Luke's gospel. They are two elderly people who waited patiently for the "consolation of Israel" and they show us what it means to wait patiently for the Lord.
