- 'Creation' and Darwin

Creation tells the story of Charles Darwin's struggles leading up to the publication of On the Origin of Species in 1859. It’s a complex story because of what was going on in Darwin’s life in the years leading up to it. As Darwin’s ideas about natural selection became ever clearer and firmer in his mind, his Christian faith became more muddled and weaker. This created tension with his wife, Emma, who was a committed Christian. Charles was devoted to his family, though, and close to his children in a way that was very unusual in the Victorian era. However, his oldest daughter, and favourite child, Annie died in 1851 at the age of ten. Darwin was with her, many miles from home, and cared for her while watching her die over several days. It had an enormous impact on him, extinguishing any faith in a God who was involved in the world. All these factors, and others which are not explored in Creation, combined to make him procrastinate and hold back from publishing his radical new ideas.
