This programme explores what happens when we don't get what we expect in life, and looks at the idea of unconditional love - as expressed in the film Marley and Me.
The programme invites discussion of the question 'Have you had times when life has not worked out as expected but you've discovered something better?' - and sets up any talk about love.
Here are some other videos that might be suitable for use at your live event (the downloads are available to anyone with a Tools for Talkssubscription)
Rachel Gardner (Romance Academy) on the centrality of love and the importance of faithfulness
Rob Parsons (Care for the Family) on his dog, and on love in the hard times
Timothy Dudley Smith (Bishop) on the story of the prodigal son
Show the first part of the programme - then freeze frame on the question "Have you had times when life has not worked out as expected but you've discovered something better?"
Invite people to share their answers with one another.
Invite feedback and discuss what our answers tell us about:
our attitude to life - do we view the future positively, and how do we respond to the unexpected?
our view of God - do we believe that God is in control, and do we trust that his plans for our lives are good?
Show the rest of the programme.
Deliver a short talk lifting off from the suggestion to look at biblical ideas of expectations, relationships, and love. You could look at the story of the prodigal son in Luke 15:11-32 and think about what this show us of God's unconditional love, perhaps illustrating these ideas with contemporary quotes about love, commitment, and relationships (N.B. these links into the large collection of relevant Bible references and contemporary quotes are free to anyone with a subscription to Tools for Talks - non-subscribers can obtain immediate access with a 1 year or 30 day subscription).
