Send a Cow is a Christian charity that enables poor farmers in Africa to become self-sufficient by providing them with livestock and training in sustainable farming techniques. They work with some of the most vulnerable groups in Africa, such as children orphaned by war, families affected by AIDS, and disabled people. An animal brings many benefits to a poor family. Its milk, eggs or meat enrich the family's diet, and any surplus can be sold to bring in an extra income. The animal's manure is particularly vital for improving soil, so a family can grow more vegetables to eat and to sell. Send a Cow works in several African countries, and places a great emphasis on passing on skills that are great for crop production and the environment. They provide a variety of help to poor families, including cows (of course!), goats, bee hives, sheep, oxen, bulls and fruit trees. Their work is long term and benefits whole communities - recipients agree to 'pass on' their first female offspring and knowledge to another poor family and so the help literally keeps on growing!
