Lesson plan
This sample lesson is from the module called The Cosmological Argument. And this lesson covers the requirement to teach the Kalam version of this argument - particularly as presented by William Lane Craig. This lesson covers the textbook material on the History of the Kalam Argument, its Modern formulation, the philosophical support for its premises, the logical validity of the argument as well as some common objections.
The lesson has four parts. First there is video part one that you would play to your students. Then there is worksheet part one that you would give out for them to read. This highlights elements of the video material that your students would need to know for their exam. You might decide, at that point, to show the video again. Worksheet part one ends with some questions that you can turn into group work or discussion - this part of the lesson is deliberately left flexible for you to do what works for your students.
Once they have seen video part one and worked through worksheet part one, they should all have a basic understanding of the subject matter and be prepared for the exam. But we don't want to stop there - we want to provide opportunities for differentiated teaching and individualised learning. And that comes in video part two and worksheet part two. Video part two goes beyond the syllabus to take the subject deeper and wider. It will always consider questions that have not even made it onto the specification yet - but are a subject of discussion in academic circles. And worksheet part two offers a suggestion for further reading for those who are interested.
But whether or not your students are interested in this extra content they will all benefit from the extra logic and critical thinking skills that are covered. Different aspects of these will pop up in different lessons because we will integrate this with the subject matter. Therefore if you use this resource fully you will find that you have not only covered the Philosophy and Ethics sections of the A Level RE specification - but also most of the A Level critical thinking specifications as well.
