Nativity! (certificate U, in cinemas from 27th November 2009) is an improvised comedy film from director Debbie Isett (Confetti), starring Martin Freeman (The Office, Hitch-hiker's Guide to the Galaxy). Failed actor Paul Maddens (Freeman) is a primary teacher who reluctantly takes on the task of organising his school's nativity play. Paul's rivalry with Gordon Shakespeare, his counterpart at the local private school gets out of hand when anarchic classroom assistant Mr Poppy overhears Paul's boast that a leading Hollywood producer is going to turn their play into a film. Soon events are spiralling out of Paul's control as the performance draws closer and closer.
In this scene, Headmistress Mrs Bevan informs the school that Paul will be organising their nativity play this year. Unfortunately for Paul, this is the first time he has heard this disturbing news. His only other attempt at the school nativity play, some years previously, was an unmitigated disaster which prompted Paul to vow never to do anything like that again.
Suggestion: Concept: responding to God's call
The clip could be used when talking about figures from the Bible who were reluctant to take up the role that God had called them to, such as Moses and Gideon. This could then be applied to us today. Sometimes we can feel daunted by the prospect of taking on a new area of ministry or a new role in church. We need to be reminded that when God calls someone to a task, he also equips them for that task.
