Nativity! (certificate U, in cinemas from 27th November 2009) is an improvised comedy film from director Debbie Isett (Confetti), starring Martin Freeman (The Office, Hitch-hiker's Guide to the Galaxy). Failed actor Paul Maddens (Freeman) is a primary teacher who reluctantly takes on the task of organising his school's nativity play. Paul's rivalry with Gordon Shakespeare, his counterpart at the local private school gets out of hand when anarchic classroom assistant Mr Poppy overhears Paul's boast that a leading Hollywood producer is going to turn their play into a film. Soon events are spiralling out of Paul's control as the performance draws closer and closer.

In this clip Paul and Mr Poppy sit through a series of bizarre, inept and inappropriate auditions from the children at St. Bernadette's primary school.

Suggestion:

Concept: God chooses the unlikeliest workers

The clip could be used when talking about the people that God chooses to carry out his purposes. Like the children of St. Bernadette's, Jesus' original band of disciples were not the obvious choices. They were simple fishermen, despised tax collectors and the like, rather than learned scholars and upstanding pillars of the religious community. It can be easy for us to think that God has no plans for us, and that he only calls the more obviously gifted people, but in fact God chooses to reveal his greatness by using the most unlikely of people in his service.
