Thinking Film: discussion starter

This Thinking Film video, built around clips from the film and interviews with the stars, will stimulate discussion about human nature. We have a great capacity to maintain dignity and value no matter what we face in life, but also the capacity to use other people for our own ends.

Discussion Guide:

The year is 1841. Solomon Northup (Chiwetel Ejiofor) is a free black American living in Saratoga with his family, earning a living as a violinist. When two strangers offer him a job playing for an out-of-town circus, he's happy to go with them. But after an evening of revelry with his new employers, he awakens in a darkened basement, in chains.

This Discussion Guide is designed to accompany the Thinking Film discussion starter

Reel to Real: New Year special

This Reel to Real video, built around clips from the film and an interview with lead actor Chiwetel Ejiofor, considers how Solomon did not just want sympathy he needed someone to take a very simple action on his behalf. As we look into the new year might we also do something that may seem simple but can be transformational for others?
