Internships

Students or graduates of a recognised institution of higher education may apply to be an intern at Damaris. We would like to appoint two interns each academic year.

(There are other options for spending a limited period of time at Damaris and working with Damaris staff team members. Click here to find out which best suits your needs.)

My internship with Damaris was a great way to challenge myself and develop new skills. I learned how to engage creatively with popular culture, deepened my understanding of the gospel, and got to watch loads of DVDs!

Nicola Lee, former research intern

What's involved?

  • Interns primarily provide research support for projects within Damaris, but there are usually extensive opportunities for writing material for some of these projects

  • The programme of work is set by Damaris, in negotiation with the intern, and will involve attachment to one or more projects within Damaris

  • The outcomes will include effective work for the projects to which the intern is attached, and significant personal development for the intern

  • Open to people taking a gap year after higher education (internships are not suitable for people taking gap years before higher education)

  • Interns can spend from two months to a year with Damaris, full or part time

  • Short-term internships are sometimes also open to students on vacation from higher education courses

  • Interns attend (and occasionally contribute to) Damaris events (e.g. workshops or school conferences)

  • Interns are expected to work in the office during normal working hours, except when involved in events when some extra flexibility is necessary

What Damaris provides

  • Personal tutor who will provide a monthly tutorial/review, as well as co-ordinating the following:

  • Guidance and direction for the intern's study and research

  • Review and critique of the work for projects

  • Opportunity to present some of the study material to others within or outside Damaris (dependent on the time of year)

  • Opportunity to attend, or to participate in, Damaris events

  • Access to Damaris library facilities

Note: Damaris cannot provide accommodation or organise it for you, but we may be able to put you in contact with some people who may be able to help - either by offering accommodation themselves or by finding someone else who can.

Fees and charges

There are no fees for interns because they are paying their way through the work they do for Damaris.

Remuneration

Interns are paid only for expenses incurred as part of their work for Damaris, and need to find the means to support themselves during the time of their internship, either by building a team of personal supporters or through part-time work. Damaris is sometimes able to offer interns part-time employment on a specific project.
